What's new in RBSNFO
====================
Version 1.1
o Attempts to recognize URL's in the text and highlights them. If th
e URL
looks correct to you you can double-click it and your browser will be
launched with the highlighted URL. Yes, double click, as RBSNFO is not
a web browser so URL handling is not a native single-click action.
o Added a new command to the Edit menu, "Open as URL". This is bound
to the
hotkey "Ctrl+U". This command will attempt to open the current sele
ction
as a URL, but only if the selection is within a single line.
o Added a context menu that duplicates the top level Edit menu, so you c
an
copy the selection to the clipboard, open as a URL or run the Fixup
command more easily. Use the right mouse button to get to it.
o Made the display a tiny bit wider to eliminate the need for a horizontal
scroll bar in many cases. The bar will still be there if you resize the
window, this is just for the default startup window size.
o Fixed a bug where the open file did not release its lock when RBSNFO w
as
invoked through the Shell (i.e by clicking on a .nfo file in Explorer)
.
o Fixed a memory leak where a small buffer was not being released.
o Fixed a bug where RBSNFO was trying to open files in WRITE mode when
launched from the shell. This was preventing opening files on CDROM's o
r
other write-protected files.
NOTE: The URL recognition code depends on finding the string "://" in th
e text.
This means that partial URL's like "www.foo.com" will not be r
ecognized,
whereas fully qualified ones such as "
http://www.foo.com" will be. The
end of the URL is the first space, TAB character or character that is
an upper ASCII character. URL's shouldn't have spaces in them anyw
ay.
So this isnt perfect, but its quick and gets 99.9% of all URL&
#39;s.

RBSNFO Version 1.1 - A simple NFO file viewer

INTENDED USE
============
This program is meant to be small and quick. It is just a viewer, not an
editor. Other programs that do both have their drawbacks. I like the UNIX
philosophy of "lots of small tools with specialized purposes" rather tha
n
the Windows philosophy of "the bigger it is and the more useless stuff it
does, the better". A user interface should be functional not an artists
canvas, and a program should do what the USER expects, not what the author
wants the user to do.
This program views NFO files, even badly constructed ones.
NOTE: In some badly formatted NFO files (and there are many, including the
RBS ones), the line break algorithm may make the NFO file look a little
worse than it would in Notepad with line wrap turned off. However, the
viewer adheres strictly to 80 characters per line, and it tries its be
st
to break things up as smoothly as possible. Sometimes however, if the
actual text does not lend itself to easy line breaks, it can look a
little crappy. This is not a bug in the program, its a bug in the input
file. If this causes you lots of grief, let Team Rebels know and I will
add an option in the next release to disable line breaks.
RANT AND RAVE
=============
This is a little utility I hacked up for a friend in Team Rebels for viewing
and cleaning up NFO files. It is a sad but true fact that many release groups
are driven more by the need to get things done quickly and "score points"
; than
by the need for quality, and this is shown in many ways, the first and most
visible of which is poorly contructed NFO files. As more people start using
UNIX/Linux who were traditionally Windows users, the more I see quality goi
ng
downhill, and simple things like making sure that lines are correctly
terminated are forgotten. UNIX uses a single character to terminate lines of
text - the linefeed character. Windows and MS-DOS use two - first the carri
age
return characterm then the linefeed character. Many NFO files these days were
clearly edited on a UNIX system, as they dont have carriage returns in them.
Window's notepad makes a very poor attempt at displaying these files, and
sometimes it becomes very difficult to get information out of them due to
the way in which the lines are wrapped by Notepad. Thus, I decided to write
and contribute to Team Rebels this little program that can be used to view
NFO files no matter how badly they have been constructed. It will obey
either carriage return+linefeed or just a single linfeed as an end of line
marker, it will wrap long lines of text (which happens when lazy packers
cut and paste from web sites and they dont break the long line that IE and
Netscape insert into a file), and it uses a font that will display the IBM
PC line draw character set, so you get to see the ASCII "art" that some
groups love so much in the NFO files. In general, it helps you, the end
user, view things the way they should have been if packers and releasers
did their jobs properly.
If you are a member of a release group, you may want to refresh your packers
memory on the "standards" that the scene tries to follow. In short, they
are:
o NFO files should not be wider than 80 characters. They are still used on
many DOS based BBSes and they look real bad if lines are too long.
o Use upper ASCII line draw characters but NOT embedded ANSI color escape
sequences.
o The file should be an MS-DOS text file. That is, it should use CR/LF as
a line terminator, not just a single UNIX-style LF character.
o Do not use Windows extended characters such as the TM symbol or the (C)
symbol. Use only IBM PC ROM BIOS characters.
o Try to put all the information that is useful to the user at the top of
the file, and leave things like group greetings and group messages to
the end of the file.
And personally, I would suggest the following:
o Always put detailed installation instructions in the NFO file. Dont EVER
assume the user is smart, no matter what the application. So many times
I have seen "if you dont know how to install this you dont need it" i
n
NFO files and that is utter crap. For example, someone could be an ASM
god, but not know how to install Softice. Its rare, but its possible.
o Have someone with at least a basic understanding of the English language
review your NFO files. It may take an extra 10 minutes to review
it but
it makes you look more professional.
o Try not to impress people with "leet speak". No-one really thinks tha
t
using words like "k001" is ... well, cool. If you need an
ego trip, make
a good release that users will find easy to install and understand.
o Try to remember that your NFO file will be seen by thousands of people,
and that it reflects on you personally as well as the group you are in.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
=========================
1) Copy the file RBSNFO.EXE to anywhere in your path. For example, to C
:\WINNT
or C:\WINDOWS.
2) Run the program and see if you like it. If you do and you want it to be the
default viewer for NFO files, click on the "Help" menu, and select th
e
"Install" option. Follow the on-screen instructions.
3) If you already have NFO files registered to view with Notepad or some other
tool and you want RBSNFO to be the default viewer, select an NFO file in
Explorer, Right-click or press the Context Menu button, select the
"Open With..." option, then select "Choose Program" and selec
t rbsnfo from
the list that Windows produces for you. Check the "Always use this progra
m
to open these files" box if thats what you want to do.
NOTE: RBSNFO will register itself from the location in which you ran it.
For this reason, you should NOT run the install process from a temp
directory. Rather, copy it to a directory where you want it to live and
then run it and select the install option.
FEATURES AND LIMITATIONS
========================
o RBSNFO is not an NFO editor. It is an NFO viewer. The only editing that it
can do is to fix up a badly formatted NFO file by adding CR/LF line
terminators if they were absent in the file. You can do this to an NFO
file by selecting "Edit" and then "Fixup", or by pressing
Ctrl+F. If the
file did not have any bad lines in it, this option will do nothing.
o RBSNFO reads the NFO file into memory, so if you tried to view an NFO file
that it larger than the amount of free RAM in your system, it will fail.
o RBSNFO does not allow you to change the display font. It uses the internal
Windows OEM font that is specifically designed to display IBM PC ROM BIOS
characters. If this causes you nightmares, feel free to drop on by #rebels
on EFnet and tell one of the ops. They will know how to get hold of me.
